For example, a major factor distinguishing sleep from wakefulness*1 is the "presence or absence of consciousness." From this, by analyzing phenomena related to sleep, we can understand the functions of the "brain" and "consciousness." We live under the illusion that we control all of our own actions, but in reality, the "unconscious" strongly governs our behavior. This world of actions governed by the "unconscious" can sometimes be revealed during sleep. In some cases, people may even walk around, eat, or even drive a car while still asleep. From such states, the essence of human "behavior" becomes clear. (From Takeshi Sakurai, "The Mystery of Sleep: Understanding the Brain from the Wonders of Sleep", NHK Publishing)
