One summer a few years ago, on my way home from an outing, just as I got very close to my house, the sound of a bird taking flight made me casually look up, and I saw something unexpected on a black corrugated iron roof. Five or six large, vivid orange flowers had suddenly appeared there, or so it felt. I immediately realized that they were trumpet vine flowers, blooming tangled in the treetop of a tall pine tree, but I couldn't understand how I had never noticed these flowers before on this road I walk every day. As I walked two or three steps while tilting my head in wonder, the flowers instantly vanished, blocked by the roof of the neighboring house. Surprised, I returned to the previous spot, and stepping back two or three steps further without taking my eyes off the flowers, they vanished from sight once again, seemingly due to a subtle shift in the angle of the roof. It turned out that the area of just a few steps back and forth, centered around the spot where I first noticed the flowers, was the only reserved seat from which they could be seen.
