To think means to think rationally. The reason I want to say something so seemingly absurd is that, observing the way people think amidst today's rationalistic trend, it seems they mistake thinking efficiently for thinking rationally. The person intends to be thinking, but in reality, they are merely saving themselves the trouble of thinking. Such sights can be seen everywhere. To think about something means that once you grasp it, you do not let go. It is the same as a painter who, once grasping a model, does not let go until they are fully satisfied. Therefore, the fact that the more one thinks, the less one understands, is an extremely normal thing for someone trying to rationally probe into matters. However, this must seem abnormal to someone who thinks efficiently. (Hideo Kobayashi, "Hints on Thinking", Bunshun Bunko)
