Fishermen are struggling due to the decline of coastal 'seagrass beds.' Seagrass beds are areas where seaweed grows, supplying oxygen to fish and serving as spawning grounds. These beds attract fish seeking food because they are rich in (note) plankton. Many of these vital seagrass beds have been lost to coastal reclamation projects. Furthermore, in recent years, a decline in seagrass beds caused by different factors has been occurring. The phenomenon known as 'seagrass die-off,' where seaweed is completely consumed by fish, is on the rise.
"Ioyake" refers to a condition where shell-like substances cover the entire surface of rocks. One of the causes is that fish such as pufferfish eat the seaweed. Previously, pufferfish would stop their activities and hibernate during the period when seaweed grows. However, recently, due to rising water temperatures, they no longer hibernate and end up eating all the seaweed, which is their food source. The impact of global warming is evident even in such phenomena. This issue is not limited to Japan but has spread worldwide, resulting in a decline in fish catches.
Struggling fishing industry stakeholders continue to make various attempts to restore lost seaweed beds. In Japan, concrete blocks planted with seaweed were repeatedly sunk at a cost of 10 billion yen, but with little to no effect. Moreover, in addition to fishing issues, it must not be forgotten that seaweed, like terrestrial plants such as forests, produces oxygen through photosynthesis using sunlight.
It is said that the oxygen produced by seagrass beds is equivalent to that of a forest of the same area, so their decline will further accelerate global warming. I sincerely hope that urgent measures to combat climate change will be taken.
