English
Recently, the value of being "cute" has been rising rapidly. Women are no longer seeking a mature, composed beauty. Parents of the generation commonly referred to as "around forty" (Note 1) and their children are often dressed in similarly cute outfits. Even at boutiques selling cute clothes for teenagers, one can spot middle-aged women in their 40s and 50s. They want to be called cute forever, no matter their age. If this were only about clothing and makeup, it would be fine.
Looking at the dictionary, you can see that 'kawaii' is used to express something small, weak, young, or adorable. The most fitting subjects are babies, including human infants. On the other hand, 'utsukushii' implies harmony, orderliness, purity, and dignity, giving it a somewhat distant atmosphere. Therefore, it may be natural to feel more affinity and empathy toward 'kawaii.' However, ① Japan is overwhelmed with cuteness.
It is even used to evaluate men. (Note 2) Instead of so-called masculine men with bulging muscles and strong action-oriented personalities, (Note 3) cute men referred to as 'herbivores' are more popular. This is clearly evident when looking at recent popular actors. While it is understandable that talents are viewed for entertainment purposes, it becomes a source of doubt when this trend extends to people in our immediate circles.
