There are approximately 25,000 varieties of roses worldwide. The emergence of diverse rose varieties is due to the continuous breeding through repeated artificial pollination. Even today, rose breeders around the world are competing to create new varieties. Although judging competitions are held in various locations every year, the 'Golden Rose Award' at the 63rd Geneva International Rose New Variety Contest was won by a disease-resistant pink and yellow rose submitted from France. A blue rose is used in English to signify something impossible.
Many breeders attempted it, but all their efforts ended in failure. In fact, roses do not contain blue pigments, so it was impossible to achieve. The more unattainable something is, the more desirable it becomes—that is human nature. Therefore, a Dutch company created blue roses by having white roses absorb dye and began selling them. At around 600 yen per stem, the price is quite high, yet they reportedly receive a fair number of orders. These blue roses are truly a vivid blue. The drawback is that over time, the blue color leaks out from the stems.
However, these are not artificial flowers, but living, real roses. In 2004, a completely different real blue rose was born. It was not the result of artificial pollination. Through joint research between Japan and Australia, they succeeded in incorporating the blue color gene. This was an extremely difficult study, but during the process, a byproduct resembling a blue carnation was also produced. It took 14 years for this blue rose to be completed, and it had to wait another 5 years before its release.
In 2009, approximately 6,000 plants were sold at around 2,000 yen each and immediately sold out. Although production capacity is currently being expanded, it will likely take some time before it can target the global market. In fact, this rose is indeed a true blue rose containing blue pigments, but its appearance is closer to purple than blue. However, its color is exceptionally elegant and moves those who see it. I think this is already sufficient, but it is possible that an even bluer rose may be born in the future.
Some people fear that creating things that do not exist in nature, such as these, could destroy the ecosystem (Note 1). Carnations produce almost no pollen, and blue roses lack the blue gene in their pollen, so mass-producing and selling them will not cause any problems. In the case of other flowers, new varieties created through genetic modification may affect other species in nature. However, despite these concerns, development is proceeding with intense competition.
Human desires are limitless, and while efforts are currently underway to create blue flowers from other species such as lilies and chrysanthemums, we must absolutely avoid any impact on the natural environment. Personally, I have no strong desire to obtain a blue rose and believe that natural flowers are sufficient. I can understand the researchers' curiosity, but I cannot shake the concern that this might have a negative effect on nature.
