Young people today (Note 1) probably do not know what a black rotary phone is. It was very large compared to today's mobile phones. It had a dial, and the handset required the length of an ear and a mouth. Therefore, it was a groundbreaking event that all the functions of a black rotary phone were incorporated into a baseband chip (Note 2) about 1 square centimeter in size in 1998 mobile phones. Furthermore, mobile phones have continued to evolve and are now small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.
In 2001, mobile phones distributed calls, emails, and internet access across multiple (Note 3) LSIs, but by 2008, functions such as music playback and camera photography could be integrated into a 1cm system LSI. This was made possible by the ability to route wires in three dimensions with a size of just 1/10,000th of a millimeter. Circuits are fabricated on a round silicon disc called a wafer. First, the circuit design is burned onto the silicon using a laser.
Metals such as aluminum are then sprayed on to create wiring. An insulating base is made. It is polished flat. At a size of a few millionths of a millimeter, it is currently possible to stack 10 layers. System LSI functionality has become 64 times that of LSI from 10 years ago. Since it has become smaller, power consumption has also decreased. Currently, there are minimal portable devices weighing only 69g. However, being too small makes them difficult to use, so they have recently been getting larger again. This is because a screen that is too small is hard to see when watching TV, for example.
Currently, devices weighing between 130g and 150g have become the mainstream, which is likely the appropriate size. It can be said that the miniaturization of mobile phones has been completed. Another factor that contributed to the miniaturization of mobile phones is the lithium battery. Lithium batteries last more than four times longer than conventional batteries. Lithium batteries were developed by a Japanese person who had been developing batteries for video cameras, and they began to be used in mobile phones from 1992.
Future development of mobile phones will likely focus on extending effective usage time after charging. In this regard, fuel cells, which generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, possess nearly ten times the capacity of lithium batteries and, due to their power generation function, do not require charging. This will be a welcome product for those who use their phones frequently and often experience battery drain. Since the batteries themselves have already been miniaturized to the size of a mobile phone, the practical implementation of this product may be near.
