Passage Content

Japanese agriculture is in decline, with 60% of its workforce aged 65 or older and facing pressure from cheap foreign agricultural products. Therefore, we must promote new entries by motivated companies and individuals to revitalize the sector. Regulations that hinder entry into agriculture should be abolished, and support systems for those who genuinely wish to farm should be strengthened. We should stop providing subsidies to every small-scale farm to maintain the status quo of traditional agriculture.
Even on a small scale, some farmers have succeeded by exporting rice and fruits overseas, generating revenue through direct-to-consumer sales, or processing and selling surplus vegetables. It is necessary to create a system that rewards such creative and resourceful agricultural workers. Moreover, companies can more easily handle everything from cultivation to processing. Given that all industries that have come to rely on subsidies are in decline, would the path forward not naturally become clear?
