A movement to stop eating bluefin tuna is spreading, primarily in Europe. It is also surprising that 80% of the world's bluefin tuna is consumed in Japan (Note 1), and I feel uneasy about the call to ban it under the Washington Convention on the protection of endangered species, as I cannot view it as an endangered species like pandas or coelacanths. Additionally, some argue against eating tuna because tuna consume large amounts of sardines, meaning that eating tuna results in the consumption of a massive quantity of sardines.
However, even if people did not eat tuna, the surviving tuna would still consume sardines and other small fish, making it impossible to prevent their decline. That said, the current bluefin tuna fishery has many problems. Among them, the current system of catching immature fish, (note 2) fattening them, and selling them is the most problematic, partly because the exact catch volume cannot be determined. I believe that Japan and many other countries should cooperate to establish and adhere to strict regulations.
