The PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) survey of 15-year-olds revealed that Japanese children's reading comprehension is declining. It is also reported that an increasing number of young people are unable to utter a single word, even when asked simple questions they were not prepared for during job interviews. Students who cannot write essays are also becoming conspicuous. Language proficiency is declining. Language proficiency is a communication skill essential for daily life, which also involves constructing sentences and expressing opinions in a way that the listener can understand.
Japanese language education has not included training to develop such abilities, but this has not been a problem until now. Compared to foreigners, even though their ability to argue is weaker, their language skills have naturally developed to a certain extent. There is a theory that the cause of declining language ability is mobile messaging and the decrease in conversations within families. I also believe that it is true that children have fewer opportunities to hone their language skills and that exchanging short messages has an impact.
