It seems that many companies are 'cloud computing' and storing their company data there. In the past, companies stored their data and software on their own company's computers or servers. However, with the 'cloud,' they can entrust their data and software to external servers. They retrieve it via the internet each time they use it. By doing so, expenses are reportedly reduced to about half of what they used to be.
However, there are concerns about storing data externally in the 'cloud,' such as what happens if the data is lost or leaks outside, or whether the 'cloud' service can be used for the long term. Let's organize the current issues with the 'cloud.' First, consider the case where the server you have entrusted your data to malfunctions. Since business operations cannot be halted, a reliable backup is essential.
Although it was not a malfunction, there have been actual past incidents where computers were seized and rendered unusable. At that time, information belonging to unrelated companies and individuals was also taken, forcing many businesses to halt their operations. Next is the issue of data leakage. Currently, compensation and other matters are determined by individual contracts. If a problem arises within Japan, Japanese law will naturally apply.
However, if data is stored using 'cloud computing' in other countries, the laws of those countries will apply. Laws vary from country to country. This is problematic. Therefore, global standard rules will naturally be necessary in the future. Currently, some countries prohibit storing government data on overseas 'clouds.' These are regulations born out of the fear that vital national information might leak.
The economic benefits of adopting "cloud computing" are significant. Therefore, we cannot simply leave everything related to the "cloud" in the hands of the private sector. We hope that measures will be established regarding the location of "cloud" infrastructure and methods for protecting privacy, so that people can use the "cloud" with peace of mind. Currently, the "cloud" still has some unstable elements. However, the cost reductions resulting from its adoption should not be overlooked.
For companies, the best approach currently available is likely to manage separately the documents entrusted to the 'cloud' and those kept in-house.
