So much chocolate is exchanged across Japan on Valentine's Day, February 14th, that it seems like a plot by chocolate companies (note). I always remember my American sister's outrage every time the day approached, as she would always complain that Valentine's Day in Japan was strange. For her, it was unbearable that a holy day for everyone to express love had become widely known in Japan as a day for women to confess their love to men.
However, in recent Valentine's Days, 'friend chocolate' exchanged between women has become very popular. Although one might still think that chocolate given to men is more common, it is said that among middle and high school students, chocolate exchanged between women overwhelmingly surpasses that given to men. Moreover, handmade chocolate is the mainstream. What would she think if she knew the current situation?
