Despite being a convenient tool to ward off the cold, humanity spent most of its history without knowing about buttons. (...) The Japanese fastened their clothes with sashes (obi). Ancient Romans did use buttons as clothing decorations, but they lacked the idea of making buttonholes. Also, in ancient China, although they passed a stick through a string, they did not go a step further to invent buttons and buttonholes. ① Even though the latter is much simpler and more convenient. However, entering the 13th century, buttons—or more precisely, buttons and buttonholes—suddenly appeared in Northern Europe. How this exceedingly simple yet sophisticated combination was invented remains a mystery. It was not because of any major breakthrough in science or technology. Buttons can easily be made from wood, animal horn, or bone, and cutting a hole in fabric creates a buttonhole. Even so, the great leap of imagination required to create this extremely simple mechanism was ② truly extraordinary. Try explaining in words the finger movements of moving and twisting when fastening or unfastening a button. You will surely be surprised by its complexity. Another mystery of the button is how it came to be discovered. Because, ③ it is almost impossible to imagine buttons gradually evolving. In short, buttons either existed or they did not.
