Passage Content

English
Just as languages differ depending on the region and culture, music also differs. The difference that anyone can notice right away is the rhythm. There are various rhythms, such as a 3-beat rhythm that progresses in counts of three ("1-2-3, 1-2-3...") or a 2-beat rhythm that matches a walking pace ("1-2, 1-2..."). This varies by culture. For example, traditional Japanese music does not have a 3-beat rhythm. It is said that the 3-beat rhythm was created in cultures where life revolved around riding horses. Japanese people also rode horses, but it was not the center of their daily life. The center of Japanese life has traditionally been agriculture. Therefore, for Japanese life, a 2-beat rhythm corresponding to walking step-by-step on two legs was better suited, and the 3-beat rhythm was not used ( 1 ).
Also, musical scales differ. Speaking of music ( 2 ), many people probably think of the 7-note scale of "Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti". However, that is the musical scale of the European region. Not all music on Earth is made up of such a 7-note scale. For example, in Asia, many regions use a 5-note scale. Japan is among them. However, even within the same 5-note scale, the pitches are not necessarily identical, so even a 5-note scale varies depending on the region.
( 3 ), keeping all this in mind, please think about the meaning of the frequently used slogan, "Music is a universal language." Is this statement correct?
( 4 ) is clear.
Today, it is safe to say that English is the most widely used language in the world. By using English, you can communicate in almost any country you go to. However, ( 5 ), can we simply state that "English is a world language"?
The point is that the exact same thing is happening with music.
