私の娘が高校生の頃、カバンに小さな人形をぶら下げているので、「それは何のお守り？」と聞いたら、「幸運グッズで、 これを付けていると試験の成績が良くなる」という返事が戻ってきました。「現に、この前の中間試験に成績が良かったから効き目がある」と信じているようで す。そこで私は、「そんなもの付けてても、次の試験はきっと悪い成績になるよ」と予言をしました。そして、その予言通り娘の期末試験の成績は散々で、幸運グッズの効き目がないことが証明されました。 そこで、私は娘に、「あなたの大体の実力は七十点を取るくらいであ る。しかし、人間には好不調というものがあって、九十点を取ることも、四十点しか取れないこともある。おそらく、あなたは前の期末試験が実力以下の成績 だったので、神にすがるような気持ちで幸運グッズを買ったのだろう。ところが、それは単に不調で実力が発揮できなかっただけだから、幸運グッズを買おうと 買いまいと、あなたの通常の実力通りなら、次の成績は上がることになる。それが、前の中間試験であった。成績が平均点を上回ったり下回ったりしているだけ なのである。それを誤解して、幸運グッズを身につければ成績が良くなると信じてあまり勉強していないようだったから、成績は必ず下がると予言できたのだ」 という説明をしました。 人生は山あり谷ありで、山があればいずれ谷が来るし、谷があればいず れ山が来るのです。たとえ谷に落ち込んでも慌てず、いずれ自然の成り行きとして谷を脱するときが来るだろうと、時を待っておれば良いのです。ところが、怪 しげな宗教を信じ込んだり、幸運グッズに手を出す人は、この当たり前のことがよくわかっていないようです。谷に落ち込むと追い詰められた気分になって、つ い神に頼ったり幸運グッズに手を出してしまうのです。やがて、時の流れとともに谷の時期が去って山の時期がやって来るのですが、それを神や幸運グッズのお 陰だと信じてしまう、というわけです。
When my daughter was in high school, she had a small doll hanging from her bag, so I asked her, "What kind of charm is that?" She replied, "It's a lucky item, and if I wear it, my test scores will get better." She seemed to believe that "In fact, my score on the recent midterm exam was good, so it really works." So I predicted, "Even if you wear something like that, your score on the next exam will definitely be bad." And just as I predicted, her final exam results were terrible, proving that the lucky item had no effect.
So, I explained to her: "Your average ability is around 70 points. However, humans have good and bad days—sometimes you might get 90 points, and other times only 40 points. You probably scored below your actual ability on the final exam before last, so you bought the lucky item in a desperate attempt to rely on higher powers. However, since it was simply a matter of bad form where you couldn't show your real ability, whether you bought a lucky charm or not, your next score was bound to go up if you performed at your usual ability. That was the recent midterm exam. Your scores are merely fluctuating above and below your average. Because you misunderstood this and seemed to study less, believing that wearing a lucky charm would improve your grades, I was able to predict that your scores would definitely drop."
Life has its ups and downs; if there is a peak, a valley will eventually come, and if there is a valley, a peak will eventually come. Even if you fall into a valley, there is no need to panic; just wait, and in the natural course of time, the moment to escape the valley will arrive. However, people who blindly believe in suspicious religions or turn to lucky items don't seem to understand this obvious fact. When they fall into a valley, they feel cornered and end up relying on gods or lucky items. Eventually, with the passage of time, the valley phase passes and the peak phase arrives, but they end up believing it was thanks to the gods or lucky charms.
