According to a story I heard from an astronaut, when entering the Asian region at night and reaching the space above Japan, the shape of the Japanese archipelago can be clearly distinguished despite it being night. While surrounding countries are submerged in the darkness of night, the fact that only Japan is recognizable is because electric lights are turned on everywhere without exception across the archipelago. Streetlights and vending machines illuminate Japan, and urban areas never sleep at night. Japan has the lowest energy self-sufficiency rate among developed nations, yet this dazzling brightness—which could almost be described as arrogant—is reportedly an extremely embarrassing sight among astronauts gathered from various countries.
