When I hit the milestone of my 40s, people told me, "The 40s go by fast." Then they said the 50s go by even faster, and they were completely right. In just over two years, I'll be turning 60. I tried imitating young people by saying, "No way!", but apparently, that phrase isn't even used anymore. When you are ten years old, one year is a tenth of your entire life, so it feels quite long. But at fifty-seven, one year is only a fifty-seventh of your life. In the end, our perception of time might feel long or short because it is compared against something built from our memories. Just as the sun, despite being the exact same size, looks completely different high in the sky versus at the mountain ridge, perhaps without realizing it, we are measuring the present using the total sum of our memories as a scale.
