Passage Content

Among the words used in conversation, there are those called buzzwords. They are indispensable to conversations among young people. There are feelings of theirs that can only be conveyed by using buzzwords. When thinking about conversation, we cannot ignore their words. As someone who teaches Japanese linguistics to Japanese university students, chatting with them is also an important place for me to collect material for my research. However, regarding the language use of young people, various ①critical comments are made. Things like "corruption of language" or "something that destroys Japanese." A great linguist of the past said that the essence of language is change. It changes, but even if someone intends to change it, they cannot change it. Conversely, even if one tries not to let it change, it is impossible to keep it in its current form. ②If so, rather than unilaterally viewing their language as something bad, we can also think of it as something that shows the interest of language.
