Passage Content

Chimpanzees clearly tell lies. Two boxes with lids are placed on the left and right, and in front of a chimpanzee watching from behind a partition, a banana, which chimpanzees love, is put into the left box, for instance, and the lid is closed. Soon, a keeper approaches. The chimpanzee has been taught beforehand that this keeper is "good"—if pointed to the box with the banana, they will open the lid, take out the banana, and hand it to the chimpanzee. The chimpanzee happily points to the left box containing the banana. However, when a keeper taught beforehand to be "bad" arrives—that is, a keeper who does not give the banana to the chimpanzee but eats it themselves—the chimpanzee tells a lie. The chimpanzee points to the right box, which contains no banana.
