When my husband was still with me, he loved edamame so much that he used to say, "As long as they're in stores, I'd have them every night." So, I always served freshly boiled edamame for dinner. He even refrained from lunch at times so as not to ruin his evening drink, so having edamame as a snack was completely out of the question. Because of that habit, I also assumed edamame was something to be eaten with dinner.
After I was left on my own, since I don't drink alcohol alone, before I knew it, I started eating edamame as a snack. I also learned to appreciate chilled edamame, but it seems to me that even with the same edamame, the taste is quite different when eaten with alcohol compared to when simply enjoying the beans themselves. I realized that when your environment changes, even the way you eat food changes.
Tonight, I think I'll add a little bit of dried baby sardines (chirimen-jako) and cook some soy-sauce-flavored edamame rice.
