Passage Content
Reference translation
English
Just the other day, when I went shopping at a nearby store. As I was about to leave the store, there was an elderly man riding an electric tricycle in front of me. Since I was in a hurry, I passed him and stood in front of the automatic door first. When the door opened, I heard a voice say, ① "Thank you." Surprised, I turned around and saw the elderly man offering his thanks with a happy smile. Realizing what had happened, I waited for him to pass through.
I felt ② very sorry toward the elderly man. Until he thanked me, I hadn't realized at all how difficult passing through an automatic door was for him. Although it resulted in a kind act, it was purely by chance, not out of a heart of kindness.
It was an event that made me truly realize that even things that are nothing to me can be a struggle for someone else. While it's hard to understand unless you put yourself in their shoes, I want to be able to notice right away the next time I encounter a situation like this. And next time, even if I am thanked, I want my action to come from a place of genuine kindness that truly responds to that gratitude.
