Declining Birthrate (*1) and Future Population
After World War II, Japan's population continued to increase. However, the rate of population growth gradually slowed down, and in 2005, it finally turned into a decline. This is because the average number of children born per woman has been decreasing year by year due to factors such as higher marriage ages and women's active participation in society (*2).
Japan's population is expected to continue decreasing in the future, and by 2052, the proportion of people aged 65 and older will reach 40%, creating a society where 1 in every 2.5 citizens is an elderly person (*3).
Looking at "② Future Population and Ratio of Population by Age Group" in the table below, the population aged 0–14 and 15–64 continues to decrease year by year, while the population aged 65 and older shows an upward trend.
However, although the birth rate decreased until 2010, a slight increase is predicted from 2020 onwards. After that, there will be no major changes up to 2055, remaining flat.
In order to increase the number of women who want to have children, expanding nursery schools and creating an environment where women can easily return to work (*4) might be the key points to solving the problems of a declining birthrate and aging society.
