"Favorite Numbers"
The numbers that Japanese people like are 1, 3, 5, 7, and so on, but they do not like 9. This is because one of the readings for 9 is "ku", which has the same pronunciation as the "ku" in suffering. For the same reason, Japanese people also dislike 4. This is because 4 can sometimes be read as "shi" (death). Therefore, hospital room numbers usually do not use "4". However, it is said that Chinese people like "9" because its pronunciation is the same as a word with a good meaning. As for "4", it is said that its pronunciation in Chinese is also similar to "death", so they dislike it. As expected, many Westerners dislike "13". This originated from the story that Jesus Christ's Last Supper had 13 people. This is different from Chinese or Japanese people disliking a number due to its pronunciation.
