京都大学霊長類(注１)研究所には「アイ」という有名なチンパンジー(注２)が飼われています。研究所ではチンパンジーに言葉を覚えさせる研究をしているのですが、このアイはすでに約１００の言葉を覚えていて、１けたの数字なら５つまで同時に記憶できるそうです。最近、アイには赤ちゃんが生まれ、「アユム」という名前がつけられました。アイが覚えた言葉や知識をアユムにどう伝えるかなど、研究もさらに広がりそうで楽しみです。
