English
In Japanese, there are words that are written the same in hiragana but have different meanings. For example, "hashi". The "hashi" used when crossing a river is written in kanji as "橋" (bridge). The "hashi" used when eating a meal is written as "箸" (chopsticks). There is also "端" (edge), which means a place far from the center. At train stations, you often hear, "Please do not walk along the ① edge of the platform." ② Words like these often have different pitch accents, so you can tell them apart in conversation. However, since Tokyo and Osaka often have opposite accents, even if someone from Tokyo says "橋", someone from Osaka might not think it means "橋". Therefore, it is important to think carefully about ( ) meaning it holds.
