ポイント1: 尊敬(そんけい)- Respectful Language (Part 1)
Respectful language elevates the actions of the other person or another respected person.
Basic pattern: native Japanese verbs commonly take お + ます-stem + になります; many Sino-Japanese する verbs take ご + noun + になります (for example ご利用になります). Do not apply the pattern mechanically to one-mora stems or verbs with a special honorific form.
V(ら)れます: can also mark respect and is generally lighter than お/ご~になります or special honorific verbs.
ポイント1: 尊敬(そんけい)- Respectful Language (Part 2 - Special Verbs)
Special verbs: 行きます・来ます・います → いらっしゃいます; 言います → おっしゃいます; 見ます → ごらんになります; 寝ます → お休みになります; します → なさいます; 知っています → ご存じです; 食べます・飲みます → 召し上がります; Vています → Vていらっしゃいます; Vてください → おV(ください). Dictionary forms: いらっしゃる・なさる・おっしゃる.
Note: Special honorific verbs normally do not use おVになります.
ポイント2: 謙譲(けんじょう)- Humble Language (Part 1)
Humble language lowers an action by the speaker or the speaker’s in-group to honor the person involved in that action. In this pattern, the action must be directed toward or related to the respected person.
Pattern: native verbs commonly take お + ます-stem + します/いたします; Sino-Japanese verbal nouns commonly take ご + noun + します/いたします, as in お持ちします and ご案内いたします.
ポイント2: 謙譲(けんじょう)- Humble Language (Part 2 - Special Verbs)
Special humble verbs: 行きます・来ます → まいります; 言います → 申します; います → おります; 見ます → 拝見します; します → いたします; 聞きます・訪問します → うかがいます; 食べます・飲みます・もらいます → いただきます; 会います → お目にかかります.
ポイント3: 丁寧語(ていねいご)- Polite Language (ございます)
Commonly used with customers in shops, stations and service settings, and in company telephone conversations.
Patterns: Nです → Nでございます; Nがあります → Nがございます.
ポイント4: 使(つか)い方(かた)のルール - Usage Rules (Notes)
Asking what a superior wants: Avoid ~たいですか. Use expressions such as コーヒーでもいかがですか or 何か召し上がりますか.
Asking about ability: Avoid できますか so the other person is not put on the spot; use forms such as 運転なさいますか.
Offering help: Do not use ~てあげます toward a superior; use a humble form such as お持ちしましょう.
