1. ～に関して (About / Regarding / Concerning...)

Sentence Pattern
Noun (N) + に関かんして
Noun (N1) + に関かんする N2

Meaning: Regarding / concerning...
✓ に関して is close in meaning to について, but is generally more formal and written and emphasizes relation to a topic or issue.
✓ It often appears with verbs such as investigate, explain, ask, or provide information (調べる、説明する、質問する).

今回こんかいの事件じけんに関かんして何なにか詳くわしいことがわかりましたか。
Have you found out any detailed information regarding this incident?
このプロジェクトに関かんして、何なにかいいアイデアはありませんか。

2. ～をめぐって (Surrounding / Concerning...)

Sentence Pattern
Noun (N) + をめぐって
Noun (N1) + をめぐる N2

Meaning: Surrounding / Concerning (an issue)...
✓ The subject performing the action is usually plural.
✓ The second clause contains verbs expressing multiple people arguing, fighting, or opposing each other over something.

Many opinions were expressed surrounding the environmental issue.

3. ～にかけては (When it comes to... / In terms of...)

Sentence Pattern
Noun (N) + にかけては

Meaning: When it comes to / in terms of...
✓ Highlights an area in which a person or thing shows an especially outstanding or remarkable degree compared with others.
✓ It is often used for abilities, skills, and strengths, but can also emphasize a notably negative characteristic.
✓ The following clause often contains a strong evaluation such as 一番、最高、誰にも負けない、右に出るものはない.

あの政治家せいじかは演説えんぜつにかけては最高さいこうのレベルだ。
That politician, when it comes to giving speeches, is at the highest level.
数学すうがくにかけては、彼女かのじょはクラスでいつも一番いちばんだった。
When it comes to math, she was always number one in the class.
走はしることにかけては、誰だれにも負まけないつもりだ。
When it comes to running, I intend to not lose to anyone.

4. ～に対して (Towards... / In contrast to...)

Sentence Pattern
A. Towards... (Directed at a target)
Noun (N) + に対たいして
Noun (N1) + に対たいする N2
B. In contrast to... (Contrastive comparison)
Noun (N) + な / である + のに対たいして
V / Aい (普通形) + のに対たいして
Na-adjective だ / Noun N だ + な / である ＋ のに対たいして

This grammar pattern has two completely different meanings depending on the context.

A. Towards... (Directing at a target)

✓ Targeting someone or something. Showing an attitude, action, emotion, or feeling towards that subject.

B. In contrast to... (Opposing comparison)

✓ Expresses the opposition or stark difference between two subjects being compared.

You must not speak so roughly towards your superiors.
山田先生やまだせんせいは学生がくせいに対たいして厳きびしいです。

政府せいふの案あんに対たいして住民じゅうみんは大反対だいはんたいした。
The residents strongly opposed the government's proposal.
このアンケートから会社かいしゃに対たいする不満ふまんが読よみ取とれる。
From this survey, we can clearly read the dissatisfaction towards the company.
やる気きがなかった前まえの会長かいちょうに対たいして、新あたらしい会長かいちょうは素晴すばらしい行動力こうどうりょくがある。
In contrast to the previous chairman who had no motivation, the new chairman has fantastic action skills.
うちでは、父ちちは感情かんじょうが激はげしいのに対たいして、母ははは冷静れいせいで穏おだやかな性格せいかくです。
At home, whereas my father has intense emotions, my mother has a calm and gentle personality.
朝あさはパンを食たべると答こたえた人ひとが30％だったのに対たいして、ご飯はんを食たべると答こたえた人ひとは65％だった。
While 30% of the respondents answered that they eat bread in the morning, 65% answered that they eat rice.

5. ～にこたえて (In response to...)

Sentence Pattern
Noun (N) + にこたえて
Noun (N1) + にこたえる N2

Meaning: In response to / to meet...
✓ Used when taking appropriate action to respond to expectations, requests, wishes, support, or feelings from others.
✓ Common nouns include 期待、要求、要望、気持ち、アンコール.
✓ The following clause states the action taken in response.

両親りょうしんの期待きたいに応こたえて、私わたしはイギリスに留学りゅうがくした。
In response to my parents' expectations, I studied abroad in the UK.
社員しゃいんの要求ようきゅうに応こたえて、労働時間ろうどうじかんを短縮たんしゅくした。
In response to the employees' demands, the working hours were shortened.
応援おうえんしてくれる人ひとの気持きもちにこたえて立派りっぱな試合しあいをしよう。
Let's play a splendid match in response to the feelings of our supporters.
