1. ~としたら / ~となれば / ~とすると (Assuming / If... then...) (N: Noun)
N / Plain form + となったら / となれば / となると
Meaning: Assuming / if A, then B.
✓ としたら / とすれば / とすると set up A as a hypothesis and then give a judgment, conclusion, or response in B; A may be unlikely or simply assumed for reasoning.
✓ となったら / となれば / となると often suggest “if it actually comes to A / once A becomes a real situation,” and are readily used for concrete possibilities.
✓ With とすると / となると, B tends to be a natural result, judgment, or conclusion, so direct volition, requests, and commands are generally unsuitable.
2. ~ものなら (If it is possible...) (N: Noun)
Meaning: Assuming something that is almost impossible to happen. But if it were possible, I would strongly desire to do it.
✓ The preceding clause uses a potential verb (for things extremely difficult to achieve). The following clause expresses a strong desire or wish of the speaker.
✓ Additionally, this structure is found in the colloquial phrase やれるものならやってみろ (If you can do it, let's see you try), often used to challenge or provoke.
3. ~ようものなら (If one should happen to...) (N: Noun)
Meaning: Presents a bad hypothetical situation; if one should happen to do that, a terrible consequence will surely follow.
✓ The preceding clause is a hypothesis, and the following clause expresses a deduction (usually an unwanted, severe consequence).
4. ~ないこと에는 (Unless...) (N: Noun)
I-adjective + くない + こと에는
Na-adjective / N + でない + こと에는
Meaning: Unless the action in the first clause is done, the event in the second clause will certainly not be able to happen.
✓ The preceding clause acts as a necessary condition, and the following clause must be a sentence with a negative meaning.
5. ~を抜きにしては (Without... it would not be possible to...) (N: Noun)
Meaning: If it weren't for the factor (N), the event in the following clause could not happen.
✓ Often accompanies words expressing high evaluation or gratitude from the speaker towards the factor N.
✓ The following clause is always a sentence with a negative meaning (will not be able to happen / cannot be completed).
6. ~としても / ~にしても / ~にしろ / ~にせよ (Even if...) (N: Noun)
N / Plain form + にしても / にしろ / にせよ
* Aなだ -> である / Nだ -> である
Meaning: Even if that were to happen, the speaker's feelings, reasoning, or judgment in the following clause would not be affected.
✓ The preceding clause of としても can only be a hypothesis (has not happened yet). However, the preceding clause of にしても / にしろ / にせよ can be either a hypothesis or an actual fact that has already occurred.
✓ The second clause primarily expresses the speaker's evaluation, judgment, impression, or determination.
