~ものだ・~にすぎない (Naturally... / Nothing more than...)

JLPT N2
Shinkanzen N2 • 7 key grammar patterns
Point 1N2_L23_G1

1. ~ものだ (It is natural that... / Generally speaking...)

Sentence Pattern
Vる / Vない + ものだ
I-adjective / Na-adjective + ものだ

Meaning: It is natural / generally / such is the nature of...
✓ In this use, ~ものだ states a general nature, tendency, or commonly accepted truth.
✓ The subject may be a general class/group, or a particular case used to make a generalized observation; it is too absolute to say that an individual subject is impossible.
✓ This “general truth” use normally uses non-past forms. However, ~ものだ has other uses with past forms, such as ~たものだ for nostalgic recollection.

Example Sentences (3)

It is hard to notice oneself, but everyone naturally has some habits or quirks.

✓ The speaker gives a strong evaluation of a specific situation based on common sense, norms, or their viewpoint.
✓ Often concludes that “this is exactly what one would call...” or “that really is...”.
✓ Do not memorize an absolute rule that it can never occur with emotion-related wording; the key is that the sentence functions as an evaluative assertion.

Even if you tell me to deliver a package all the way to America by the end of today, that is simply impossible.
