1. ~ためだ / ~ため(に) (Because / Due to...)

+ ためだ / ため(に)

Expresses a cause or reason, often with a more objective, formal, or written tone than から・ので. In its causal use, the following clause is usually a result or state of affairs, and direct commands, invitations, or strong volitional expressions are generally avoided.

  • ためだ: often sentence-final to state the reason.
  • ため(に): used mid-sentence, cause first and result second.

電気代でんきだいが高たかくなったのは、エアコンをつけっぱなしにしていたためだ。
The electricity bill went up because we kept the air conditioner on all the time.
大雨おおあめのため、今日きょうのフライトはすべて欠航けっこうになった。
Due to heavy rain, all flights today have been canceled.
彼かれの遅刻ちこくは、目覚めざまし時計とけいが鳴ならなかったためだ。
His lateness is due to his alarm clock not ringing.

2. ~によって / ~による (By / Due to / Through...)

Sentence Pattern
Noun (N) + によって / によっては / により / による N
  • Created, invented, or discovered by someone.
  • Depending on A, B differs: Depending on.
  • Cause / Reason: Due to A, ~ happens.
  • Method / Means: To do B through/by means of A.

アンケート調査ちょうさによって、顧客こきゃくのニーズが明あきらかになった。
Through the questionnaire survey, customer needs became clear.
薬くすりの副作用ふくさようによって、めまいが起おこることがある。
Due to the side effects of the medicine, dizziness may occasionally occur.
インターネットによる情報じょうほうの収集しゅうしゅうは、非常ひじょうに便利べんりだ。
Information gathering through the internet is extremely convenient.
クレジットカードによるお支払しはらいを希望きぼうされる方かたは、次つぎの注意ちゅういをお読よみください。

3. ~から / ~ことから (Because / Judging from...)

Sentence Pattern
Noun (N) + から
V/A (Plain form) + ことから

Clause 1 (reason) is an objective fact. Clause 2 (result) is an outcome or a judgment/inference based on that reason.

Like "ため", this structure cannot be used with expressions of volition, desire, or commands.
Example Sentences (5)
道みちが狭せまいことから、「猫ねこの道みち」と呼よばれている。
Because the road is narrow, it is called "Cat Street".
ほんの小ちいさな誤解ごかいから、友達ともだちとの関係かんけいが悪わるくなってしまった。
Our friendship went bad just from a very small misunderstanding.
声こえが震ふるえていることから、彼女かのじょが緊張きんちょうしていることがわかった。
From her trembling voice, I could tell (infer) that she was nervous.
日本語にほんごの授業じゅぎょうで隣となりの席せきになったことから、私達わたしたちは親したしくなった。
Since we sat next to each other in Japanese class, we became good friends.
顔かおがよく似にていることから、二人ふたりは親子おやこだとすぐに分わかった。
From their very similar faces, anyone could immediately tell they were parent and child.

4. ~おかげで (Thanks to) / ~せいで (Because of / Due to)

+ おかげで / おかげだ
+ せいで / せいだ
🟢 ~おかげ: Focuses on a good result. Conveys a positive, grateful feeling. (Thanks to...)
🔴 ~せい: Focuses on a bad result or consequence. Implies blame. (Because of...)
* ~せいか: Perhaps because of...
Describes an actual past result. Do not use it with expressions of volition or commands.
Example Sentences (4)
友達ともだちが手伝てつだってくれたおかげで、引ひっ越こしが早はやく終おわった。
Thanks to my friends helping me, the moving finished early.
このプロジェクトが成功せいこうしたのは、チーム全員ぜんいんの協力きょうりょくのおかげだ。
This project succeeded thanks to the cooperation of the entire team.
彼かれのいい加減かげんな計画けいかくのせいで、全すべてが台無だいなしになった。
Everything was ruined because of his sloppy plan.
最近さいきん寝不足ねぶそくのせいか、頭あたまがぼーっとする。
Perhaps because of lack of sleep lately, my head feels hazy.

5. ~のだから / ~んだから (Because it is natural/obvious that...)

+ のだから / のですから / んだから / んですから

The reason clause expresses an obvious fact that the listener already knows.

The result clause expresses the speaker's judgment, volition, or desire, or a request / advice to the listener.

Example Sentences (3)
世界せかいは広ひろいのだから、色々いろいろな習慣しゅうかんがあるのは当然とうぜんだ。
Since the world is wide, it is only natural that there are various customs.
貴方あなたはけがをしているんだから、無理むりをしてはいけませんよ。
Since you are injured, you shouldn't overdo it. (Advice)
笑わらわないでください。真剣しんけんにやっているんですから。
