1. Introduction to Keigo (Honorifics)

Keigo (Honorifics)

👉 It is a way of expressing respect from the speaker to the listener or the person being talked about.

  • 尊敬語 (Sonkeigo): Respectful language (Elevates the other person).
  • 謙譲語 (Kenjougo): Humble language (Lowers oneself).
  • 丁寧語 (Teineigo): Polite language (Desu / Masu form).

2. Sonkeigo (Verbs) - Method 1

3. Sonkeigo (Verbs) - Method 2

Sentence Pattern
Passive form (れる / られる)
Conjugate Verbs into PASSIVE FORM (れる / られる):
Group 1

Change the [i] sound ending to [a] sound + れます

  • かく ➔ かかれる
  • きく ➔ きかれる
Group 2

Drop ます / る + られます

  • たべる ➔ たべられる
  • みる ➔ みられる
Group 3 (Irregular)
  • きます ➔ こられます
  • します ➔ されます

4. Sonkeigo (Verbs) - Method 3

Sentence Pattern
お + Vます + になります
⚠️ Exceptions (DO NOT use this structure):
1. Group 3 verbs (e.g., コピーします...).
2. Verbs with only 1 syllable before ます (e.g., みます, ねます, います...).
Example Sentences (1)
A: お疲つかれになりましたか。 B: ええ、ちょっと疲つかれました。
A: Are you tired? (Respectful to the listener) B: Yes, a little tired. (Normal polite response)

5. Sonkeigo (Nouns / Adjectives)

Sentence Pattern
お / ご + N / I-adjective / Na-adjective

Add the prefix お / ご before a word to show respect for the subject being discussed (e.g., belongings, family, or the listener's condition).

Prefix [お]

Used with native Japanese words (Wago)

  • Nouns: おくに, おなまえ, おしごと...
  • Na-adj: おげんき, おじょうず, おひま...
  • I-adj: おいそがしい, おわかい...
Prefix [ご]

Used with Sino-Japanese words (Kango)

  • Nouns: ごかぞく, ごいけん, ごりょこう...
  • Na-adj: ごねっしん, ごしんせつ...
  • Adverbs/Others: ごじゆうに (Freely)...

6. Sonkeigo form of "V てください"

Sentence Pattern
お / ご + Vます + ください

"Please do..."

A more polite and formal way of saying "V てください", often used with customers or people of higher status.

このボールペンをお使つかいください。
Please use this ballpoint pen.
係かかりの者ものに聞きいて来きますので、ちょっとお待まちください。
I will go ask the person in charge, so please wait a moment.
