1. Introduction to Keigo (Honorifics)

Keigo is a way to show respect from the speaker to the listener or the person being talked about.
It is divided into 3 main types: Sonkeigo (Respectful language), Kenjougo (Humble language), and Teineigo (Polite language).

2. Respectful Language - Method 1: Special Verbs

Sentence Pattern
行きます / 来ます / います → いらっしゃいます
食べます / 飲みます → 召し上がりますめしあがります
言います → おっしゃいます
知っています → ご存じぞんじです
見ます → ご覧らんになります
します → なさいます
Some Vs have special, irregular Respectful forms.
You must memorize these specific V pairs.

3. Respectful Language - Method 2: Passive Form Conjugation

Sentence Pattern
1グループ [い]段 → [あ]段 + れます
2グループ Vます + られます
3グループ します → されます / 来ます → 来こられます
Conjugate the V into the Passive form to use it as Respectful language.
Group 1 Vs: Change [i] column to [a] column + [れます]. Group 2 Vs: Replace [ます] with [られます]. Group 3 Vs: きます -> こられます, します -> されます.
Example Sentences (1)
書かく -> 書かかれる
聞きく -> 聞きかれる
食たべる -> 食たべられる
見みる -> 見みられる
着きる -> 着きられる
する -> される

4. Respectful Language - Method 3: お Verb に なります

Sentence Pattern
お + Vます + になります
The pattern is [お Vます + に なります].
Note: Do not use this with Vs that have only one syllable before ます (e.g., みます, ねます). Do not use it with Group 3 Vs.
Example Sentences (1)
A:お疲つかれに なりましたか。
B:ええ、ちょっと 疲つかれました。

→ A: Are you tired? B: Yes, a little tired.

5. Respectful Language for Nouns and Adjectives

Sentence Pattern
お + N / A (和語わご)
ご + N / A (漢語かんご)
Add the prefix [お] or [ご] before an N or A to show respect.
[お] is used with native Japanese words, while [ご] is used with words of Chinese origin (Sino-Japanese words).

6. Respectful form of Verbて ください

Sentence Pattern
お + Vます + ください
Structure: [お Vます + ください].
This is an extremely polite way to request or ask someone to do something.

この ボールペンを お使つかい ください。

→ Please use this ballpoint pen.

係かかりの者ものに 聞きいて 来きますので、ちょっと お待まち ください。

→ I will go ask the person in charge, so please wait a moment.
