1. 「~は・・・ことだ」 (Indicating a matter or content)

Sentence Pattern
A. Cases where ONLY 「こと」 is used, NOT 「の」
Vる (普通形) + ことだ

Use only こと in sentences that explain or describe certain content. Used to specifically express the content of a matter or story.

Example Sentences (5)
Aさんの将来しょうらいの夢ゆめは、漫画家まんがかになること(の)です。
A's future dream is to become a manga artist.
最初さいしょのワールドカップがウルグアイであったということ(の)は今いままで知しらなかった。
I hadn't known until now that the first World Cup was held in Uruguay.
サッカーというスポーツの特徴とくちょうは、基本的きほんてきに手てを使つかってはいけないこと(の)だ。
The characteristic of the sport called soccer is basically that you cannot use your hands.
山田やまださんが大阪おおさかへ転勤てんきんするということ(の)が正式せいしきに決きまった。
It has been officially decided that Mr. Yamada will transfer to Osaka.
AランチとBランチの違ちがいは、Aが魚料理さかなりょうりでBが肉料理にくりょうりであること(の)だ。
The difference between lunch A and B is that A is a fish dish and B is a meat dish.

2. Fixed grammar patterns with 「こと」

Sentence Pattern
Vる / Vない + ことがある

Meaning: There are times when... / Occasionally... Sometimes it happens that..., (or) there are also cases where...

Example Sentences (5)
俺おれとお母かあさんはたまに喧嘩けんかをすることがあります。
My mother and I occasionally have arguments.
妻つまはぼくが話はなしかけても返事へんじをしないことがある。
There are times when my wife doesn't reply even when I talk to her.
うちの水道すいどうは、ときどき水みずが出でないことがある。
The tap water at our house sometimes stops running.
学校がっこうのパソコンはときどきフリーズすることがある。
The computers at school freeze sometimes.
以前いぜんは仕事しごとが多おおくて、12時じごろ家いえに帰かえることもあった。
In the past, when I had a lot of work, there were times when I didn't get home until around 12 o'clock.

3. ~ことはない (There is no need to...)

Sentence Pattern
Vる + ことはない

Equivalent to: 「~する必要ひつようはない・~しなくてもいい。」
Translated as: There's no need to... / You don't have to...

*Additionally, refer to other structures ALWAYS USED WITH こと:
・~ということだ / ~とのことだ
・~ないことはない
・~ことは~が、・・・
・~ことにする / ~ことにしている
・~ことになる / ~ことになっている
Example Sentences (5)
気きにするな。あなたが謝あやまることはないよ。
Don't worry about it. There's no need for you to apologize.
彼かれの病気びょうきはすぐによくなるから、何なにも心配しんぱいすることはない。
His illness will get better soon, so there's no need to worry about anything.
面接めんせつの質問しつもんは簡単かんたんですよ。そんなに心配しんぱいすることありませんよ。
The interview questions are simple. There's no need to worry so much.
ここは無料駐車場むりょうちゅうしゃじょうだから、お金かねを払はらうことはない。
Since this is a free parking lot, there's no need to pay money.
少すこし熱ねつがあるが、ただのかぜだろう。すぐに病院びょういんに行いくことはない。
I have a slight fever, but it's probably just a cold. There's no need to go to the hospital right away.

4. Verbs of Perception (See, Hear, Feel)

Sentence Pattern
B. Cases where ONLY 「の」 is used, NOT 「こと」
Vる / Vている + の

Used when talking about/describing a scene or sound perceived by the senses: 「見みる・見みえる・眺ながめる・聞きこえる・感かんじる etc...」

Example Sentences (4)
苦労くろうの(こと)跡あとが見みえる。
I can see traces of hardship.
この窓まどから庭にわで子こどもたちが遊あそんでいるの(こと)が見みえる。
From this window, I can see the children playing in the garden.
遠とおくの(こと)山やまが微かすかに見みえる。
I can faintly see the mountains in the distance.
あの日ひ、家いえが大おおきく揺ゆれるの(こと)を感かんじた。
That day, I felt the house shaking violently.

5. Evaluation, Necessity (~のに)

Sentence Pattern
Vる (普通形) + のに(は)

When expressing an evaluation (convenient / useful / necessary...) towards a certain purpose. Use 「~のに(は)・・・」.

Example Sentences (3)
健康けんこうの(こと)ために、朝あさの散歩さんぽを日課にっかとしている。
I make a daily routine of taking a morning walk for the sake of my health.
車くるまはこの村むらで生活せいかつするの(こと)にどうしても必要ひつようなのだ。
A car is absolutely necessary for living in this village.
短時間たんじかんで食事しょくじをするの(こと)にはファストフードがやはり便利べんりだ。
For eating a meal in a short time, fast food is definitely convenient.

6. Emphasizing Information (~のは・・・だ)

Sentence Pattern
V/A/N (普通形) + のは・・・だ / からだ / ためだ

Used to point out / describe information that needs emphasis. Structure: 「~のは・・・だ / からだ / ためだ」.

Example Sentences (4)
物ものが落おちるの(こと)は引力いんりょくのためだ。
The reason things fall is because of gravity.
彼女かのじょがそうしたの(こと)は私わたしのためではなく自分じぶんのためだ。
The reason she did that was not for me, but for herself.
彼女かのじょに初はじめて会あったの(こと)は5年前ねんまえである。
The first time I met her was 5 years ago.
遅おそく帰かえったの(こと)は残業ざんぎょうがあったからだ。
The reason I came home late is because I had overtime work.

7. ~というのは・・・だ (Definition)

Sentence Pattern
N + というのは・・・だ

Means that..., the meaning of (something)... is...
Often used in defining sentences to explain an event or thing.

Example Sentences (4)
桜さくらさんが「ちょっと待まってね」というのは一時間いちじかんも待まつということだ。
When Sakura says "Wait a moment," it means waiting for an hour.
美びというのは、見みる人ひとの目めの中なかでのことだ。
Beauty is something that exists in the eyes of the beholder.
正三角形せいさんかっけいというのは三辺さんべの長ながさが同おなじ三角形さんかっけいのことである。
An equilateral triangle means a triangle with three sides of equal length.
「アクセスする」というのはどんな意味いみですか。
What does 'access' mean?

8. ~のではないか / のではないだろうか (Isn't it... / I wonder if...)

Sentence Pattern
TTT (Aな/N + な) + のではないか / のではないだろうか

Equivalent to 「~と思おもう。」 (Isn't it the case that..., I wonder if...). Gently expresses the speaker's opinion or conjecture.

Example Sentences (4)
今いまからちゃんと勉強べんきょうしないと、大学入試だいがくにゅうしは難むずかしくなるのではないか。
If you don't study properly from now on, isn't it going to be difficult to pass the university entrance exam?
こんなに塩辛しおからい食品しょくひんは体からだによくないのではないか。
Isn't food this salty bad for your health?
一日一いちにちいちページ書かいて行いけば、来週中らいしゅうちゅうには完成かんせいできるのではないか。
If I keep writing one page a day, wouldn't I be able to finish it by sometime next week?
もしかしたらヤンさんは本当ほんとうのことを知しっているのではないでしょうか。
Is it possible that Mr. Yan actually knows the truth?
