Part 1: Confirmation Question ~は Nですか

Sentence Pattern
A: ~は + Nですか。
B: はい、Nです。
ー はい、そうです。
ー いいえ、Nじゃありません。
ー いいえ、N1です。
ー いいえ、違ちがいます。
For confirmation questions, you can answer はい、そうです (Yes, it is) instead of repeating はい、Nです.
To answer negatively, use いいえ、違ちがいます (No, it is not) or いいえ、N1です instead of いいえ、Nじゃありません.
Example Sentences (3)
A: これは 新聞しんぶんですか。
B: はい、そうです。

→ A: Is this a newspaper? B: Yes, it is.

A: あなたは 18歳じゅうはっさいですか。
B: いいえ、二十歳はたちです。

→ A: Are you 18 years old? B: No, I am 20.

A: それは シャープペンシルですか。
B: いいえ、違ちがいます。

Part 2: Choice Question ~か、~か

Sentence Pattern
A: ~は + N1ですか、N2ですか。
B: N1です。 / N2です。
This is a question format asking to choose between N1 and N2.
For this type of question, you typically answer by selecting one of the options provided by the speaker.

A: これは 新聞しんぶんですか、雑誌ざっしですか。
B: 新聞しんぶんです。

→ A: Is this a newspaper or a magazine? B: It is a newspaper.

A: あなたは 18歳じゅうはっさいですか、二十歳はたちですか。
B: 私わたしは 二十歳はたちです。

→ A: Are you 18 or 20 years old? B: I am 20.

Part 3: This, That, That over there

Sentence Pattern
これ / それ / あれ
この N / その N / あの N
これ、それ、あれ (This, That, That over there) are used only for things.
このN、そのN、あのN can be used for both people and things. They must always be followed by a N.
これ、このN are used for items close to the speaker.
それ、そのN are used for items far from the speaker but close to the listener.
あれ、あのN are used for items far from both the speaker and the listener.
Example Sentences (4)
これは 傘かさです。

→ This is an umbrella.

あれは 田中たなかさんの 車くるまです。

→ That over there is Mr. Tanaka's car.

あの方かたは 山田先生やまだせんせいです。

→ That person over there is Mr. Yamada.

この 本ほんは 日本語にほんごの 本ほんじゃありません。

→ This book is not a Japanese book.

Part 4: N2の N1 – Interrogative 何(なん)

Sentence Pattern
A: ~は + 何なんの + N1ですか。
B: ~は + N2の + N1です。
Question: What kind of N1 is it? Answer: It is an N1 about N2.
何なんの N1 is used to ask about the nature or category of a N.
N2 is usually a word indicating the nature or category.
Example Sentences (2)
A: これは 何なんの 本ほんですか。
B: 日本語にほんごの 本ほんです。

→ A: What kind of book is this? B: It is a Japanese book.

山田やまださんは 男おとこの 先生せんせいです。

→ Mr. Yamada is a male teacher.

Part 5: N2の N1 – Interrogative 誰(だれ)

Sentence Pattern
A: ~は + 誰だれの + N1ですか。
B: ~は + N2の + N1です。
Question: Whose N1 is it? Answer: It is N2's N1.
誰だれの is used to ask about ownership/possession.
N2 is usually a word indicating a person.
Example Sentences (2)
A: これは 誰だれの 本ほんですか。
B: 私わたしの 本ほんです。

→ A: Whose book is this? B: It is my book.

あれは 田中たなかさんの 辞書じしょです。

→ That over there is Mr. Tanaka's dictionary.

Part 6: Omission of N1 in N2の N1

Sentence Pattern
N2 + の + N1です。
〇 N2 + のです。(N1が物ものの時とき (đồ vật))
✖ N2 + のです。(N1が人ひとの時とき (người))
〇 N2 + のです。 (When N1 is an object)
✖ N2 + のです。 (When N1 is a person)
N2のです means: N2's / belongs to N2.
In the pattern N2の N1です, N1 can be omitted (leaving N2のです) if N1 has already been mentioned and is an object.
の can only replace N referring to things, never N referring to people.
Example Sentences (3)
A: あれは 誰だれの 本ほんですか。
B: ミラーさんのです。

→ A: Whose book is that? B: It's Mr. Miller's.

A: この 鞄かばんは あなたのですか。
B: いいえ、私わたしのじゃ ありません。

→ A: Is this bag yours? B: No, it is not mine.

A: ミラーさんは IMCの 社員しゃいんですか。
B: はい、IMCの 社員しゃいんです。

→ A: Is Mr. Miller an employee of IMC? B: Yes, he is an employee of IMC.

Part 7: そうですか

Sentence Pattern
そうですか。
Meaning: Is that so? / I see.
Used when the speaker receives new information and expresses understanding or acknowledgment.
Even though it ends with か, it is not a question but rather an exclamation.
そうですか is pronounced with a falling intonation at the end.
Example Sentences (1)
A: この 傘かさは あなたのですか。
B: いいえ、違ちがいます。佐藤さとうさんのです。
A: そうですか。

→ A: Is this umbrella yours? B: No, it's not. It's Ms. Sato's. A: I see.
