Part 1: Counting Hours and Minutes

Sentence Pattern
何時なんじ / 何分なんぷん / ~時半じはん
[何時なんじ]: what time?
[何分なんぷん]: what minute?
[~時半じはん]: half past ~.
Ex: half past two: 二時半にじはん.
[半はん] is equivalent to 30 minutes, but it is not used independently; it must always be used with an hour.
Example Sentences (2)
A: 今いま 何時なんじ 何分なんぷんですか。
B: 7時しちじ 30分さんじゅっぷんです。
7時半しちじ はんです。

→ A: What time and minute is it now? B: It's seven thirty. It's half past seven.

A: 日本にほんは 今いま 何時なんじですか。
B: 9時くじです。

→ A: What time is it in Japan right now? B: It's nine o'clock.

Part 3: Particle に

Sentence Pattern
N に V
N (Time) に V: Time + に + Verb.
[に]: at/on/in (time).
Used to indicate the specific time when an action takes place.
Example Sentences (2)
A: 毎朝まいあさ 何時なんじに 起おきますか。
B: 6時ろくじに 起おきます。

→ A: What time do you wake up every morning? B: I wake up at 6 o'clock.

A: 毎晩まいばん 何時なんじに 寝ねますか。
B: 11時じゅういちじに 寝ねます。

→ A: What time do you go to bed every night? B: I go to bed at 11 o'clock.

Part 4: から…まで: From ... To

Sentence Pattern
N1から N2まで
[から]: from.
[まで]: to/until.
[から] indicates the starting point, and [まで] indicates the ending point of time or place.
[から] and [まで] can be used independently and do not necessarily have to be accompanied by a verb.
Example Sentences (3)
A: あなたは 毎週まいしゅう 何曜日なんようびから 何曜日なんようびまで 勉強べんきょうしますか。
B: 月曜日げつようびから 金曜日きんようびまで 勉強べんきょうします。

→ A: From what day to what day do you study every week? B: I study from Monday to Friday.

A: 学校がっこうは 何曜日なんようびから 何曜日なんようびまで ですか。
B: 月曜日げつようびから 金曜日きんようびまで です。

→ A: From what day to what day is school? B: It is from Monday to Friday.

銀行ぎんこうは 9時くじからです。

→ The bank is open from 9 o'clock.

Part 5: N1とN2: N1 and N2

N1 と N2
N1 and N2.
[N1とN2]: N1 and N2.
The particle [と] connects two nouns in parallel, meaning "and".
Example Sentences (2)
銀行ぎんこうの 休やすみは 土曜日どようびと 日曜日にちようびです。

→ The bank is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

A: 図書館としょかんは 何階なんがいですか。
B: 3階さんがいと 4階よんかいです。

→ A: Which floor is the library on? B: It's on the 3rd and 4th floors.

Part 6: ~ね: right? / isn't it?

Sentence Pattern
~ね
Add [~ね] at the end of a sentence.
[~ね]: ~right? / isn't it?
[ね] is used at the end of a sentence to seek agreement from the listener, or to confirm and remind.
Example Sentences (2)
A: 毎日まいにち 10時じゅうじまで 働はたらきます。
B: 大変たいへんですね。

→ A: I work until 10 o'clock every day. B: That must be tough, isn't it?

A: 山田やまださんの 電話番号でんわばんごうは 871はちなないちの 6813ろくはちいちさんです。
B: 871はちなないちの 6813ろくはちいちさんですね。

→ A: Mr. Yamada's phone number is 871-6813. B: It's 871-6813, right?

Part 7: Asking for Phone Numbers

Sentence Pattern
A: ~は 何番なんばんですか。
B: ~は ~です。
[何番なんばん]: what number?
Read phone numbers digit by digit.
For long phone numbers, separate them into groups using the particle [の].
Ex: 0650-222-123 : ゼロろくごゼロの にににの いちにさん.
Example Sentences (2)
A: 図書館としょかんの 電話番号でんわばんごうは 何番なんばんですか。
B: 08ゼロはちの 678ろくななはちの 789ななはちきゅうです。

→ A: What is the library's phone number? B: It's 08 678 789.

A: 山田先生やまだせんせいの 携帯電話けいたいでんわの 番号ばんごうは 何番なんばんですか。
B: 0909ゼロきゅうゼロきゅうの 707ななゼロななの 708ななゼロはちです。

→ A: What is Mr. Yamada's mobile phone number? B: It's 0909 707 708.
