Part 1: ~ように~: so that ~ / in order to ~
Indicates a goal to strive for or achieve.
Before ように, non-volitional verbs such as なる, わかる, きこえる, みえる... are used.
The verb Vる before ように is often conjugated in the Potential Form (
B: すみません、大学院に 入れるように、毎晩 勉強してるんです。
→ A: Want to go out and play tonight? B: I'm sorry, I'm studying every night so that I can get into graduate school.
B: ええ、年を とったら、困らないように、貯金します。
→ A: Are you going to save your bonus? B: Yes, I save money so that I won't have trouble when I get old.
Part 2: ~ようにする: try to ~ / make an effort to ~
Talks about continuous effort to do or not do something.
~ように しています: maintaining a certain habit.
→ I didn't eat vegetables much before because I hated them, but since vegetables are good for your health, I try to eat them.
→ I used to smoke a lot, but recently I'm trying not to smoke.
Part 3: ~ようにしてください: Please try to ~
Politely requests someone to do or not to do something.
It has a softer tone than ~Vてください or ~Vないでください.
→ Please try to exercise every day.
→ Please try absolutely not to be late tomorrow.
Part 4: ~ようになりました: reached the point where ~ / came to ~
Talks about new changes, new habits.
Vるように なりました: used to not do this, but now does.
Vないように なりました: used to do this, but now no longer does.
→ Because I hated vegetables before, I didn't eat them much, but since vegetables are good for the body, I try to eat a little bit every day. Now I have come to eat them.
→ I used to smoke a lot before, but recently I've stopped smoking.
Part 5: ~V可能形るようになりました: became able to ~
Talks about abilities achieved after a period of effort and practice.
B: はい、読めるように なりました。
→ A: Have you become able to read Japanese newspapers yet? B: Yes, I have become able to read them.
B: いいえ、まだ 弾けません。早く 弾けるように なりたいです。
→ A: Have you become able to play the piano yet? B: No, I still can't play it. I want to become able to play it soon.
Part 6: ~V可能形なくなりました: became unable to ~
Talks about things you used to be able to do, but can no longer do now.
~V
B: いいえ、太りましたから、その服が 着られなくなりました。
→ A: Are you going to wear these clothes to tomorrow's party? B: No, because I gained weight, I became unable to wear those clothes.
B: 子供が病気になりましたから、海に行けなくなりました。
→ A: How was your summer vacation? B: Because my child got sick, we became unable to go to the sea.
Part 7: Adjective → Adverb
A-na → A-ni
When an adjective modifies a verb, the adjective is changed to an adverb in the above way.
→ I want to become good at making tea quickly.
