Part 1: How to conjugate verbs into the Imperative Form

Sentence Pattern
動詞どうしの命令形めいれいけい
Group I: V[i]masu → V[e]
Group II: Vmasu → Vro
Group III: kimasu → koi, shimasu → shiro
Note: Stative verbs like 「ある」, 「できる」, 「わかる」... do not have an imperative form.

Part 3: How to use the Imperative and Prohibitive Forms

Sentence Pattern
命令形めいれいけいと禁止形きんしけいの使つかい方かた
Used to force someone to perform a certain action. Often used by men, especially older men or those in high positions.
Used for giving commands in drills, sports activities, and emergency situations.
Used for cheering in sports...
Used in signs, prohibition notices...
Example Sentences (4)
非常口ひじょうぐち、急いそげ!

→ Emergency exit, hurry!

A: だめだ。もう 走はしれない。
B: がんばれ!あと 1000メートルだ。

→ A: It's no use. I can't run anymore. B: Hang in there! Just 1000 meters left.

車くるまを とめるな。

→ Do not park the car.

写真しゃしんを とるな。

→ Do not take pictures.

Part 4: ~Vなさい

Sentence Pattern
Vなさい
Gives a command or request, but softer than the Imperative Form. Women often use this pattern.
Usually used when parents speak to children, teachers to students, etc. It cannot be used with superiors.
Example Sentences (2)
べんきょうしなさい。

→ Study.

食たべなさい。

→ Eat.

~と 読よみます: read as ~
~と 書かいてあります: it is written as ~ / it says ~
Example Sentences (2)
A: あそこに 何なんと書 かいてあるんですか。
B: 「使用禁止しようきんし」と書 かいてあります。

→ A: What does it say over there? B: It says "Do Not Use".

A: あの漢字 かんじは 何なんと 読よむんですか。
B: 「えいぎょうちゅう」と 読よみます。

→ A: How do you read that kanji? B: It is read as "eigyouchu".

Used to explain the meaning of a word or sentence.
Example Sentences (2)
A: この漢字 かんじは どう いう 意味いみですか。
B: 使つかうなと いう意味 いみです。

→ A: What does this kanji mean? B: It means "Do not use".

A: このマークは どういう 意味ですか。A: この マークは どういう いみですか。
B: 洗濯機せんたくきで洗 あらえると いう 意味いみです。

→ A: What does this mark mean? B: It means it can be washed in a washing machine.

Part 7: ~と 言(い)っていました : ~ said that ~

Sentence Pattern
~と 言いっていました
Used to convey the words of a third person.
• ~と 言いいました: used for direct quotation.
• ~と 言いっていました: used for passing on a message.
Example Sentences (2)
田中たなか: お弁当べんとうを行 かいに いきますよ。
A: 田中たなかさんは なんと 言いっていましたか。
B: お弁当べんとうを 買かいに行 いくと 言いっていました。

→ Tanaka: I'm going to buy a bento. A: What did Mr. Tanaka say? B: He said he's going to buy a bento.

A: 山田やまださんは いますか。
B: 今いま 出でかけています。30分30ぷんぐらいで 戻もどると 言いっていました。

→ A: Is Mr. Yamada here? B: He's out right now. He said he would be back in about 30 minutes.

~と 伝つたえて いただけませんか
Politely ask to leave a message for someone.
Example Sentences (2)
A: すみませんが、渡辺さんに あしたのパーティーは 6時からだと 伝えて いただけませんか。A: すみませんが、わたなべさんに あしたの パーティーは 6じからだと つたえて いただけませんか。
B: 分わかりました。 6時6じからですね。

→ A: Excuse me, could you please tell Watanabe that tomorrow's party starts at 6 o'clock? B: I understand. Starting at 6 o'clock, right.

A: すみませんが、先生せんせいに きょうは 柔道じゅうどうの練習 れんしゅうに行 いけないと 伝つたえて いただけませんか。
B: はい、分わかりました。

→ A: Excuse me, could you please tell the teacher that I can't go to Judo practice today? B: Yes, I understand.
