Part 1: Humble Language (謙譲語(けんじょうご))
Sentence Pattern
Humble Language (謙譲語 ) has 2 usages:
Method 1:
- For Group 1 and Group 2 verbs: Do not use for verbs that have only 1 syllable when conjugated to the ます form, such as:見 ます, 寝 ます, 居 ます...
- For Group 3 verbal nouns: However, there are also some exceptional verbs where we use お instead of ご:
+ お電話 します (to call)
+ お約束 します (to promise)
- We can increase the level of humility in the following way:
+ お V(ます) / ご N いたします
Method 2: Some special verbs:
-行 きます / 来 ます → 参 ります
-居 ます → おります
-食 べます / 飲 みます / もらいます → いただきます
-見 ます → 拝見 します
-言 います → 申 します
-聞 きます / (うちへ) 行 きます → 伺 います
-知 っています / 知 りません → 存 じております / 存 じません
-会 います → お目 にかかります
Explanation & Guidelines:
*Humble Language (謙譲語 ):
- Method 2 is more polite than Method 1, so Method 2 is usually preferred. For verbs that cannot be conjugated using Method 2, we will use Method 1.
- When using "Humble Language", note that the verb indicates your own action or state, not the action of the other person.

→ A: Where does your family live? B: They live in Vietnam.

Sentence Pattern
Polite Language (丁寧語 ):
Some words are exchanged to increase politeness.
(e.g., あります → ございます, です → でございます, いいですか → よろしいでしょうか).
Some words are exchanged to increase politeness.
(e.g., あります → ございます, です → でございます, いいですか → よろしいでしょうか).
Example Sentences (2)
電話は 階段の 横に ございます。
→ The telephone is next to the stairs.
このパンフレットを いただいても よろしいでしょうか。
→ May I have this pamphlet?
