あげます: To give
やります: To give (to someone of lower status, or animals/plants)
It can be combined with another verb (
It is recommended to use あげます over やります because it is a more polite word.
→ I gave coffee to the department manager.
→ I gave food to the dog.
→ I bought a tie for someone in the company.
→ I read a book to my younger sister.
Part 2: Give me
Use in combination with a verb (
You can use くださいます for family members of the speaker.
→ When I graduated, the teacher gave me a pen.
→ People in the company gave me flowers on my birthday.
→ On Christmas, my younger sister gave me a cup.
→ The department manager saw me off to the station.
→ The department manager's wife taught me tea ceremony.
Part 3: Receive
Use in combination with another verb (
You can use いただきます for family members of the speaker.
→ I received a souvenir from the company president.
→ I had the department manager buy me wine.
→ I had my friend make me a cake.
→ On my birthday, I had my child play the piano for me.
Part 4: ~Vて くださいませんか : Could you please do ~ for me?
Politely asking someone to do something for you.
~ Vて いただけませんか has a higher degree of politeness (
B: はい、少々 お待ちください。
→ A: Excuse me. I got the wrong size for this sweater. Could you please exchange it for me? B: Yes, please wait a moment.
B: ええ、いいですよ。
→ A: I want to go to the station. Could you please show me the way? B: Yes, sure.
Part 5: に: to, in order to
Indicates the purpose of an action. For example, "as a gift", "as a souvenir (
→ Took a picture as a souvenir.
→ The teacher gave me a pen to celebrate my graduation.
